Simple wisdoms

Several years ago I hosted a two-hour talk radio program every Sunday night on WDBO in Orlando, FL. I focused on Constitutional issues and our government, as well as topical issues such as the treatment and imminent death of Terri Schiavo, the PATRIOT Act, and our involvement in the Middle East. I defended then-President Bush against all critics and attackers, believing our cause to be righteous.

During each show, I kept a handful of index cards upon which I had written truisms that I would frequently quote during my broadcasts.

I recently came across those dog-eared, worn index cards and was a little amazed to think of how long ago it’s been, and yet here we are today… hopefully waking up our fellow countrymen to these realizations.

One of my favorites and frequently cited was this 1998 statement by then Rep. Ron Paul:

“If we stuck to the Constitution as written, we would have:

  • no federal meddling in our schools
  • no Federal Reserve
  • no US membership in the UN
  • no gun control
  • no foreign aid
  • no welfare for big corporations or “the poor”
  • no American troops in 10 foreign countries
  • no NAFTA, GATT, or “fast track”
  • no arrogant federal judges usurping states’ rights
  • no attacks on private property
  • no income tax

We could get rid of most of the Cabinet departments, most of the agencies, and most of the budget. The government would be small, frugal, and limited.”

On another card I wrote a statement by historian Edward Gibbon (1737 – 1794)

“In the end, more than freedom they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life and they lost it all: security, comfort, and freedom.

When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to GIVE to them, when the freedom they wished for most was a freedom FROM responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free and was never free again.”

There are more index cards, but I’ll end with this one by Norman Thomas who often over the years, was a presidential candidate in the US Socialist Party.

“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But under the name of ‘liberalism,’ they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program until one day, America will be a socialist nation without knowing how it happened.”

  1. I used to listen to you on that show, Andrea. Ron Paul was one of those struck Constitutionalists who had the right plan but who got ridiculed and lambasted every day in Congress, yet he never stopped his tireless effort to get us to audit the fed, cuz then all this crap would have come out. We got lazy as a nation.
