It would be nice if the Democrats, in the interests of “environmentalism”, would gang-up on Andrew Cuomo regarding the “cancer cluster” that surrounds Stewart ANG Base (on the outskirts of Newburgh, NY). The contamination, and my whistleblowing about it, actually happened when his father (Mario) was NY governor. In early August of 1990, I reported (via official channels) illegal dumping at the base. When nothing was done after a full year, then I rode in a TV-news helicopter and took the story public.
Rather than anyone thanking me for trying to protect the drinking water, the corrupt base commander DESTROYED my 16-year military career. When the money ran out, so did my first wife. My discharge papers had a code (which I did not learn about until years later) that wrongly prevented me from getting well-paying jobs for which I was fully qualified.
In 1992, the front-runner in the Democratic presidential primary was “Mr. Environment”, Mario Cuomo. That was, until I made a phone call and told the NY ANG Inspector General investigating officer that I was going to go national with my story. Three days later, Mario Cuomo “mysteriously” withdrew from the presidential race.
Lawyers told me that I had “a compelling case” to sue the Air Force and the base commander. But, they all wanted money up-front. I had none. So, my story was no longer “news”, nobody cared about my job situation, and I became homeless — twice in three years. But, during my “down time”, I applied for a job-training program and got a paralegal certificate. I learned how to become a “pro-se activist”. I got my first wife’s lawyer sanctioned (fined by the court for misconduct), twice. He appealed, twice. He lost, twice. (Yes, you read correctly. I argued cases at the NY Appellate Division, in front of a panel of seven experienced judges, and I beat the “real” attorney — twice. At that time, he had been practicing law for 19 years, and he taught the paralegal course at the other college across town from where I got my certificate. The final sanction order is now established case law in NY regarding attorney misconduct.)
Fast forward to May of 2019, I filed my own Federal lawsuit. (The reason for the delay is a looooooooong story.) Got assigned a judge that had a reputation for being strong against political corruption. (He had put my former NY state senator in prison, but I was living in Tennessee by that time.) Word of my case “leaked” out. (pun intended) I got some brief visibility because of the movie “Dark Waters”, which involves a very parallel situation. (The real Robert Billott knows who I am.) The official Air Force story became that there had been “an accidental leak, sometime between 2014 and 2016”, even though I had documented proof of a NY State investigation that showed A MILLION TIMES the reporting limit for this chemical in the airfield groundwater at Stewart ANG Base in the early 1990s.
But then, the Left-tilting environmental reporters found out that I’m a conservative. Attention to my story dwindled rapidly. My lawsuit was dismissed on a technicality. (It had already passed a “judicial review” that is required for all pro-se Federal cases, and it had ground through preliminary proceedings for more than a year.) AFTER news of my case, suddenly, several large law firms now have TV ads that say, “If you were exposed to fire-fighting foam at a military base, call our number right away.” BUT, because I’ve already filed a lawsuit, I’m not eligible for a penny of the money that those lawyers dangle out there — even though I’m the guy that blew the whistle THIRTY YEARS before most people knew that there was a problem.
So, even though it’s Mario Cuomo that really belongs in prison, it would be at least some small vindication if Andrew Cuomo (who was notified, but did nothing) gets jammed-up by his own party as a political “sacrifice” regarding the contaminated drinking water in Newburgh, New York.
