Blackhawk Down

On this day, 28 years ago, one of the most intense battles ever fought took place. A company of US Army Rangers from 3rd Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment, operators from the US Army’s C squadron  of 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment Delta (Delta Force), and helicopters & crews from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment launched a raid to capture all of war criminal Mohammed Farrah Aidid’s advisers/lieutenants.

The raid started off well, but quickly spiraled out of control as the first of two Blackhawks to be shot down went down deep in the city forcing the men to fight their way through large crowds of armed somali fighters, who were using human shields.

Estimates say the force encountered over 10,000 armed combatants during the battle. The battle would be made famous by the motion picture ‘Blackhawk Down’.

This is the story of those #heroes
