It’s still snowing…

…and while it continues to pile up and coat everything in a crystaline sparkle, I am enjoying every moment of it. I found a great Christmas song video, and as I listen to the music, I’m struck by how much history is found in the lyrics and the beat. War time. The emphasis on family, faith and hope. LOTS of hope to get through the other side of WW II.

There’s a whole generation of us who were conceived immediately post war, or sooner while loved ones were home on leave before shipping out.

That time of their lives is reflected in the most beautiful Christmas-related songs I’ve heard. Without quite realizing it until now, they’ve always been my favorites, loved since I was very young.

And know that as I look out my Maine window, the snow is falling fast and falling steadily. (Just hear those sleigh bells jing-a-ling…” Christmas Card. Florida seems so far away…

Sleigh bells ring, are you listening,
In the lane, snow is glistening
A beautiful sight,
We're happy tonight,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

Gone away is the bluebird,
Here to stay is a new bird
He sings a love song,
As we go along,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman,
Then pretend that he is Parson Brown
He'll say, "Are you married?"
We'll say, "No man"
But you can do the job when you're in town.

Later on, we'll conspire,
As we dream by the fire
To face unafraid,
The plans that we've made,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

Over the ground lies a mantle of white
A heaven of diamonds shine down through the night
Two hearts are thrillin'
In spite of the chill in the weather

Love knows no season, love knows no clime
Romance can blossom any old time
Here in the open
We're walkin' and hopin' together
Together, together, together

Sleigh bells ring, are you listening,
In the lane, snow is glistening
A beautiful sight,
We're happy tonight,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

Gone away is the bluebird,
Here to stay is a new bird
He's singing a love song,
As we go along,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman,
And pretend that he's a circus clown
We'll have lots of fun with mister snowman,
Until the other kiddies knock him down.

When it snows, ain't it thrilling,
Though your nose gets a chilling
We'll frolic and play, the Eskimo way,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

Walking in a winter wonderland,
Winter wonder wonder wonderland,
Winter winter wonder wonderland.

And for later this evening when the lights are low, the kids are all snuggled in their beds, maybe you have a log or two burning in the fireplace, you’ve got your favorite slow-sipping liqueur (Frangelica?) straight or on the rocks, and you just want to give yourself up to the meaning of the season, I think I’ve got just the thing for you.
