As the saying goes, “timing is everything.”
A short time after I invited Mr. Leather (“An Old Piece of Leather”) to join me here on the front page of The Radio Patriot, I took on a part time job working for a cruise line at nearby Port Canaveral.
It’s part time in that it is two (sometimes three) days a week, checking in passengers who are embarking for a seven day cruise.

Learning the “nautical ropes” of the job (as it were) has been interesting. Greeting families, school sports teams, couples, and “solo flyers” coming aboard is a pleasure. I particularly enjoy the bright-eyed and excited little children who’ve been told they’re going on the “big ship.”
Why am I telling you this?
Well you might have noticed that of late, my post publishing frequency is somewhat sporadic.
Having Mr. Leather’s contributions has been timely and fortuitous. He’s historically been The Radiopatriot’s most prolific commenter (884 comments to date). Like my site slogan reads, he also has ” so many words.”
While I was still in Maine, it occurred to me that Mr. Leather should have a platform to share his outlook and opinions. And though I’ve never before shared this site (now going on 18 years), I invited him to contribute his thoughts as a feature writer on the front page.
The timing couldn’t have been better, as I began working with the cruise industry a few weeks ago and though it is part time, it occupies a considerable amount of my day when my attention would otherwise be focused on current events.
So, I’m happy to have Mr. Leather “aboard!” Though topics are akin to rocking and rolling on rough seas, I know it is “smooth sailing” with the seasoned US Marine “Mr. Leather” at the bridge when I’m on ship duty.
Ahoy!

Your PT job sounds like it’s enjoyable. Congratulations. I have been working PT in Security since 2016 after retiring from 35 yrs of varied DoD federal service (active duty AF and DoD civilian). But have been wondering if now at 69 I might enjoy more working in the wide service industry with the tourists in this fine St Augustine area.
A large percent of the folks I’m working with are retired (many from managerial positions and/or professionals who owned their own practice) and have taken the job to A) get out of the house. B) Continue to feel useful and engaged c) extra cash for golf fees, dinners out, and the little extras that don’t come out of their household budget. Once past a certain age, Social Security payments are not “dinged” thus, after Medicare and SS tax is taken out of their pay, what they make is theirs. Also, with this arrangement, PT employees can work as many or as few shifts as they prefer. Some work only one day a week, while others grab extra shifts whenever they can. It’s quite flexible.
Ahoy! Love what you put together and thank you!.. and thank you for allowing Leather! So much good and TRUTH here!!!…
I’m in Minnesota and as of yesterday, the state will be known as the “sanctuary state”. Pretty soon every resident here will learn about the 3rd amendment rights! this is not so good…..
Love you both, and thank you.
