What is the difference between…

The main difference is that Israelites refers to an ancient people who were descendants of the biblical figure Jacob (who was renamed Israel), while Jews are specifically the descendants of Judah, one of Jacob’s sons. Today the term “Jew” refers to both the religion and a cultural identity, while “Israelites” refers to the ancient nation, and “Israeli” refers to a citizen of the modern state of Israel.

Israelites

Who they were: The descendants of all twelve of Jacob’s sons who lived in the ancient kingdoms of Israel and Judah.

Time period: Used to describe the people from about 1500 BC to 500 BC.

Modern use: The term “Israelites” as a direct, historical group is now obsolete, though people can be called “Israelites” if they are descended from the ancient people.

Jews

Who they are: Originally, the term referred to descendants of the tribe of Judah, which was one of the two kingdoms that made up the ancient nation of Israel.

Modern use: “Jew” is now used to refer to people who practice the religion of Judaism or who have a cultural and historical connection to the Jewish people.

Relationship to Israelites: All Jews are considered Israelites, but not Israelites were Jews (as they descended from the other 11 sons of Jacob as well.)

Israelis

Who they are: Citizens of the modern nation-state of Israel.

Modern use: the term is a nationality, not an ethnicity or religion. People of many different faiths and backgrounds are Israeli citizens, including Jews, Muslims, Christians, and others.

Relationship to Jews: The majority of Israelis are Jewish, but being Israeli does not automatically make someone Jewish and vice versa.

Jesus was an Israelite traced back to Jacob. Ask yourself, why did the Jews pick Barabas over Jesus Christ to be prosecuted?

Also, the first Mass was the Last Supper, now known as the Eucharist, the symbol of Jesus Christ.

  1. Jesus is descended from the Tribe of Judah, as indicated in the genealogies found in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, which trace his lineage back to Judah and King David. This lineage fulfills biblical prophecies regarding the Messiah’s ancestry. So, the information above is not accurate!

  2. The Last Supper was not a Mass. The word Mass is not in the Bible. The word is supposed to mean, “You are dismissed.” I guess that’s what adherents say to those who don’t believe in a Eucharist. The Greek word for Mass might be Maza which means “barley cake.” Perhaps a reference to the cakes offered to the Queen of Heaven.
