An email from Mark Williams

Thanks for asking about the Tea Parties!

Mark Williams

Late Saturday representatives of the NAACP, the National Urban League and the Tea Party Express (that would be me) sat down with representatives of other groups from both the right and the left.

We discussed and debated the increasing level of rancor developing along racial lines in the discussion of public policy.

By the end of the discussion, hosted and moderated by Geraldo Rivera and broadcast live on the Fox News Channel we all agreed to tone it down, denounce those extremists who attempt to latch onto our respective movements and move forward.

Sadly there are elements around each of our groups who insist on exasperating the problem, and others who blunder into a delicate truce to stomp about and throw a tantrum, perhaps offended that they were not at the table the other night.

Mr. Webb and the Tea Party Federation put themselves into that column.  Perhaps they are seeking to shift some of the media attention to themselves.  They will have to tell you why they did what they did, I cannot speak for any tea party group with which I am not affiliated (I have never personally been affiliated with this “Federation”.   The first I knew of my ‘membership’ with them was when I was ‘thrown out’.”)

With this I must now hold up to my obligation to denounce those who seek to divide our unity in the march to defeat the real enemy of out of control government that threatens the liberty of all Americans.   Therefore I call on the Federation to join in our progress and cease their efforts to divide.

To that end I am refusing all media requests on the “Federation”.  Do not forget, I am a 30-year media veteran and know full well that these requests are simply invitations for the undoing of the great progress made by all this past weekend and that Mr. Webb and his “Federation” are attempting to subvert.

  1. Mr. Williams,

I read the piece they objected to. IMHO it was overwritten severely, lost its cleverness early on, and seemed to be kicking a dead horse, BIG time.

I appreciate that once-taboo areas are now fair game due to excesses and misuses and abuses by the Obama crowd. I’m happy to jump on that wagon myself when it’s appropriate. But that letter you wrote was just abysmal. Not ‘racist’ per se, but not snappy or clever enough to come near justifying the excess of provocative language. If we go there, we have to go there with recognizably high quality, undeniable wit and truth. That wasn’t it.

I deplore the divisions, and I do not enjoy the “Federation” horning in on the publicity. I’ve been to your events and you guys are obviously out there on the tip of the spear, and I appreciate you. That letter, though, was a LOUSY idea. Hope you learn from it.

    1. Dave in Dallas, you are so right. Yes, Williams so-called witty comment was overdone. After two sentences, one cringed as he went on kicking that dead horse. And you’re right about the “Federation.” Here was the opportunity for another group to jump in and and try to expand its own power base, which could only have been negligible.
