Rough Surf

A friend and I walked down to the beach where we sat and watched the rough surf at Canaveral late Tuesday afternoon, a high tide made even higher and mightier by a storm-driven stiff and steady 20 mph easterly wind that clawed at the shoreline.

No way either of us would have ventured into that churn. It was mighty, it was powerful, and it had our respect.

I was saddened when I read this tonight for this couple who didn’t realize what they were getting into when they playfully entered a similarly strong surf.

The couple could be seen going to the water’s edge when massive waves came and swallowed the woman, an unidentified 20-year-old. The man tried to save her but it was too late.

“The search has not returned any results at this time. The work continues,” the Southern Regional Search and Rescue Brigade said.

According to reports, rescuers have expanded their search from “Rivera beach to the Mamayka microdistrict.”

They have been searching for three days.

  1. Oh no, that was awful! Those waves were huge though. Must have been an undertow. I have such respect for the power of water. That poor man!
