Do you talk out loud to yourself?

I do. All the time. I keep myself company, laugh at my jokes or at myself when I do something dumb. I’m really pretty good company. I have marvelous conversations that I find stimulating and clever. I have pretend conversations with people in my orbit, telling them things I want to remember to tell them later, or… might not say otherwise… ahem.

👄

I’m pretty good at encouraging myself when I’m into a task that’s a major project like painting a room, gardening, tackling a kitchen full of dirty dishes, pots and pans, or doing anything tedious. “You’re almost there,” I say aloud, offering myself encouragement and a mental pat on the back as I sigh with satisfaction and renewed energy and determination. On the other hand, I don’t think you’d want to hear what I have to say when I’ve hammered my thumb…

Now I have a friend whose companion is a sweet dog. My friend keeps a running conversation with FIDO, and I wonder if perhaps that’s my friend’s way of talking out loud to himself without feeling self-conscious.

FIDO responds with a cocked head and quizzical look but seems to completely understand his master’s chatter, so the conversation continues unabated.

Thus… when I came upon this article, it intrigued me so I read it, (but not out loud. 😂)

Take a look and see if this is you. I sure do see myself in it!

  1. I talk to myself ALL the time. According to my Mom–I used to talk to myself when I was little, and now at the age of 66–I’m quite good at it! 😂

  2. Pretty much all day long, and when I’m not, I’m talking to God and asking him to help me or show me or keep me from something. I think it helps organize your flustered brain..
