The reader comment above is incorrect. My husband was a Commander in Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He deployed from Germany to Saudi Arabia on Christmas Eve 1990. His unit was in Dammam at a tent city until equipment arrived. They established a training area near Hafar Al-Batin and trained for weeks. As they had prepared for war in a European environment, they had to train and establish procedures for operating in a desert environment. The air operation began at 3am on January 16th. My husband was sleeping in his GP-small (tent) when the Operations NCO woke him to tell him the war had begun. On 23 February his unit crossed into Iraq. I don’t usually share this kind of info, however, we need to ensure our history is reported correctly. He was there – first hand knowledge…even has pictures.

MY UNCLE DIED ABOARD THE USS EPISILON IN 1943, TORPEDOED BY JAP SUB, PEARL HARBOR THEATER. HIS BROTHER DIED IN KOREA KIA 1952. MY DAD SERVED USN 1942-1945, I SERVED USN 1968-1970. USA!
