JUST IN: President Trump has ordered the release of 172 million barrels from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve to counter soaring oil prices amid the ongoing war with Iran.
The drawdown begins next week and will occur over about 120 days as part of a coordinated International Energy Agency action releasing 400 million barrels from member countries’ reserves.
Energy Secretary Christopher Wright stated the U.S. will replenish 200 million barrels within the next year, while the President said the reserve would be refilled after the release.
Benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude traded above $92 per barrel Wednesday evening.
The move aims to stabilize supply disruptions from attacks on Gulf infrastructure and reduced traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, though experts note it addresses symptoms rather than the underlying war-driven supply issues.
