Floridians Debate Property Tax Initiative

“Did you know? Florida League of Cities is teaching cities to fight the property tax measure?”

From Brevard News Post on Facebook.

THREAD Comments (excerpts):

“I’d rather have a local county commission collecting a property tax and spending the money than the state trying to divvy up tax dollars among 67 counties and determining what is priority. Not too mention, the state will get the tax dollars somehow to offset what they counties will lose from the property taxes no longer being collected.”

*

“What about the people who are paying taxes into perpetuity for their home? Some cannot afford the taxes on their homes because of the valuations.”

*

“They pay for services too. You know that. Services they want.”

*

“the bill is too ambiguous with no checks and balances. Small town and rural areas kowtowing to Tallahassee is just wrong. All it does is open a door for over development and data centers to the rural small towns. It’s the same rhetoric when the lottery was being debated “the funds will go to education” look how that turned out.”

*

“The first priority is affordability of their residence, is it not? What difference does services make if you can’t afford a place to live?”

*

“We will see….It may be a FAFO moment. We will see the impact of a homeowner saving $50 a week vs. paying higher sales taxes , fees and reducing community services. When the junior baseball and football leagues have to pay a bundle to practice and play games we will see.”

*

Some people are paying more in property taxes than they paid in a mortgage payment.

*

…and the principal payment gets them a house– which OBTW they need to heat, cool, have water, up keep– you get it I think.. what does that cost you per month for all those things?? a couple hundred at least I know I pay $200 is more per month than my total taxes for all of that on a $300,000 home. And that $400 a month i pay for all taxes gets roads, sewers– anyway, you know the list (if you don’t try educating your self)

*

sadly….. so many folks just can’t understand your post. They are blinded by the fact they’ll save money on property tax, but it is a TAX SHIFT. They’ll get our money ( possibly a state sales tax)

Keep up the information… some folks just don’t get it.

BTW…. If DeSantis is backing this, it will benefit the wealthy not us

*

Most people are tired of paying taxes on a home they own as well as the corrupt local officials who spend the taxes like drunken sailors.

*

Then people should take some responsibility and run for local instead office instead of depending on big government to fix their problems.

*

The blind support for this proposal is kinda scary…

What if the state decides FLOCK cameras are best for all local communities?

*

The problem are property taxes themselves. They tax perpetually; they tax on unrealized gain, taxing past initial mortgage payments on a home; they contribute to local corruption..etc..

*

what exactly are you mad about that they pay for? specifics please

*

Crazy how the city was able to get by when every single property in brevard county was valued at HALF of what it is now in 2020.

*

And there is no end in sight…as the property values continue to rise pumping more and more money into the local coffers.. money they spend like drunken sailors.

*

The cost of doing business went up as much as the value of your home. Are you that incompetent in finance?

*

The spending went up as high as the value of most homes, as well.

*

look at gas prices alone. Fire, police, public works -all using gas- that has doubled in price since 2020. And how do you keep ppl who work for the city being able to pay their bills? Do you know how many administrative jobs are required to deal with all the regulations that come from Tallahassee? You have to increase the money coming in to pay these employees for this stressful, high responsibility job. And do you want public works outsourced to a private company who pays illegal immigrants under the table?

*

Yes and for good reason. Please come to the tax reform workshop on June 24th at Indian Harbour Beach City Hall at 6pm. Educate yourself before you make a decision. Either way that you vote at least you can say you did your homework.

*

What reason does the League of Cities have to be involved with property tax cuts? Who elected them to office?

*

Come to the workshop and I will be happy to discuss.

*

read it online and it only about 30% of people will take affect on

*

You want to know true evil? The League of Cities is there to insure bureaucrats have lifelong unelected jobs.

*

If people knew the agenda of the League of Cities, many of its adherents would be reticent to be associated with it.

*

Does anyone have information on how it will affect renters and business owners? My fear is that to offset, renters and business owners with building operations will get stuck with offsetting that loss.

*

it actually helps them. The annual increase is reduced from 10% to 5%

*

it’s homestead properties only. Rental and business are not affected.

*

yes, my question is will rentals and commercial property have to pay more in taxes to make up for the loss of taxes normally received from homestead properties. That’s what I would like to see in writing.

*

Both the Brevard cities and County governments have been self serving and have noit been good stewards of the task entrustyed i them proof is the 1.2 million dollArs missing from Titusville treasury

*

Titusville is ducking and dodging being held accountable for that.

*

And it will work on many, hopefully not the majority though!

Vote Yes for your property…. They will always find a way to take more money from you, remove your house as collateral for local and state budgets bad decisions……

*

Don’t believe…..just follow the money!!

*

League of liberals running cities.

Mostly league of people who want their city to be ruled like an HOA.

*

Our own cities have hired lobbyists to fight us, luckily people seem to have gotten wise to this and passage looks imminent

*

This is not eliminating property taxes, just giving a break to homesteaded properties.

There was a 22 BILLION surplus last year.

Not alot to shuffle but it would simple to double lotto, legalize Marijuana there are a lot of ways to supplement the left over tax hole.

*

This headline is totally misleading. When an organization tries to put forth facts, headlines like this are well thought out. Regardless how the vote goes, an informed voter is the focus. Let the chips fall where they fall.

*

stop fear mongering!!! They will raise taxes regardless, at least we will get a little reprieve from paying for a home that cost $40,000 and being appraised at 250,000. Why should we have to pay taxes on something we own for the rest of our lives. Seniors are the biggest victims of this!!! They live on a fixed income and are losing their homes due to the hight taxes.

*

They’ll figure it out they have plenty of other places to get taxes from!

*

Homestead exemption needs to be revamped seeing as the current one dates back to the 80s!!

*

If cities and counties stopped giving tax breaks to corporations they could lower property taxes.

*

And keep it up and 99% of the voters will support the effort to reduce and eliminate all property taxes on homesteaded properties! You greedy ass government agencies need to learn how to effectively manage a budget as our broke homeowners have had to do for the past 8 to 10 years !!!!

*

I bought my house for $175k but pay taxes on a $500k house. I never sold…never saw the $500k. And if I do sell…I’d have to pay taxes on it again!

*

The taxing on unrealized gain is insane. Why was this ever accepted?
