On a day such as this…

. . . . .

It’s 58 degrees with a stiff breeze out of the north, clearing out the humidity and leaving us with a crystal clear, sunshiny day and whitecaps on a sapphire blue river. On my way to do errands and get my ticket for tonight’s Glenn Beck live presentation at my local movie theater, I took the river road in Cocoa (not to be confused with Cocoa Beach, ten miles to the east on the barrier island), and grabbed these pics to show you what a beautiful December day looks like on Florida’s Space Coast.

What you can’t experience is the loud rustling of the palm fronds and oak leaves whipping to and fro by the insistent wind. Or the chill air mixed with a warm winter sun giving us a delightful opportunity for fleece jackets and sunglasses.

You’re looking to the north at the Bennett Causeway bridge that connects the mainland to Merritt Island and the barrier island east of it. In one of the photos, you’ll see NASA’s VAB (Vehicle Assembly Building) on the horizon (star photo – look to the upper left of the star). I grabbed a couple of shots of some homes along the road.  Residences vary from the opulent to the modest little fish camps. But most have their own docks that lead to a boat, sometimes protected by a boathouse.

River road runs along the Indian River lagoon which makes up the intracoastal waterway system all the way south to Miami, the marine highway that runs north to south. Our annual “snowbird” boat traffic has already sailed by to warmer climes, and the river is now wide open to local boating enthusiasts.

Oh, one more thing — to learn more about the Florida Highwaymen, click here.

Enjoy the view!

  1. In the early 60s I use to work part time at my father-in-laws Gulf station and the Highwaymen use to stop by and try to sell their paintings. We bought one from Albert Hair, probably the first Highwayman.
Always like the drive along the river, especially when we use to eat at Hub’s Inn.
    Thanks.
