Republicans demand answers from FBI on Jan. 6 pipe bomb investigation
The trio pointed to whistleblower testimony on the investigation’s “unusual” character.
A trio of House Republicans have pressed FBI Director Christopher Wray for an update on the bureau’s investigation into the placing of pipe bombs near the Democratic National Committee and Republican National Committee headquarters buildings on Jan. 5, 2021.
House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, along with Arizona GOP Rep. Andy Biggs and Florida GOP Rep. Bill Posey wrote to Wray on Thursday, noting that he has not been forthcoming with their prior requests for information.
“The slow progression of the FBI’s investigation into the January 6 pipe bombs raises significant concerns about the FBI’s prioritization of that case in relation to other January 6 investigations,” they warned Wray.
The trio pointed to whistleblower testimony on the investigation’s “unusual” character, including one disclosure that “revealed that the Washington Field Office asked FBI field offices to canvass all confidential human sources nationwide for information about the individual and the crime over a year after the placement of the bombs.”
The whistleblower further indicated that the bureau had not determined a motive for the bomb placements.
One former FBI assistant director, they noted, suggested that the investigation ought to have yielded some results, saying “[i]t just doesn’t add up… [t]here’s just too much to work with to not know who this guy is.”
The Republicans further set a June 7 deadline for Wray to comply with their request for a briefing on the investigation.
