Going to a see a film by oneself is not something I do. In fact, I think this is only the second time I have.
But I couldn’t get anyone who was free or interested enough to accompany me, so I purchased a ticket and went by myself to see “Sound of Freedom” at the local theater.
I’m so glad I went. the film is intense, but not in the way you might think. It is heartbreaking, and yet filled with courage, fortitude, and bravery. Jim Caviezel is excellent in the role of Tim Ballard. Honestly, so believable as to convince the viewer that he himself lived through the harrowing yet determined experience that Ballard has.
As the film credits rolled by and Caviezel came on screen to deliver a sober message, folks exited the theater. I sat there, silently collecting my thoughts. And reducing my composure to a level where I could make my way out.
There are no bloodcurdling scenes, but there doesn’t have to be. The camera turns away from what a child is experiencing, to see it in Caviezel’s eyes. And that’s plenty.
Tim Ballard is a brave man. Courageous and smart. This movie depicts it without hesitation. What he’s done to save children, what he put himself through, the chances he has taken and come out alive after descending into hellish circumstances are nothing short of God’s grace and miracle.
A friend saw the film last night and texted me that he found it hopeful and uplifting, not too dark. I found it to be that and more.

Ahead of the dual-blockbuster opening weekend for Oppenheimer and Barbie, independent film Sound of Freedom has cemented its status as a surprise summer hit after surging past $100 million at the box office.Since its July 4 release date, the Angel Studios thriller about child sex trafficking has upended industry expectations, raking in nearly seven times its $14.5 million budget in North American ticket sales.
Last weekend, it comfortably outpaced pricey blockbusters like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and on Wednesday it edged past Tom Cruise‘s new Mission: Impossible installment in single-day ticket sales.
But in a country split by endless culture wars, Sound of Freedom has also proven divisive, earning lavish praise from conservatives and a screening at Donald Trump‘s Bedminster golf club, while drawing criticism from liberals who insist it is QAnon propaganda.
In a statement on Thursday, Utah-based Angel Studios said the movie had sold more than 8.9 million tickets, for a domestic box office haul topping $100 million.
‘Sound of Freedom has become the people’s movie,’ said Jared Geesey, SVP of Global Distribution with Angel Studios, touting the film’s crowdfunded model.
‘This is the opposite of the top down system developed by Hollywood gatekeepers. We are empowering people to be part of choosing, funding, and sharing stories that amplify light and impact culture,’ he added. However, Hollywood journalist Rodger Friedman wrote on his Showbiz411 blog that Sound of Freedom’s box office stats should come with an ‘asterisk’ because churches and Christian groups had purchased blocks of tickets by the millions to give away.
There’s no way to know who actually paid for those tickets, or how many of them were really used by theatergoers, Friedman argued.
Based on the riveting real-life story of a former US government agent rescuing children from the clutches of Colombian criminals, Sound of Freedom at first glance seems like the type of thriller with broad appeal.

‘What’s almost as interesting as the movie itself is the reaction it seems to provoke from the mainstream media that seem determined to tear it down at any cost,’ said British thriller writer Will Jordan in a positive review posted to his 1.8 million-subscriber YouTube channel, ‘The Critical Drinker.’
‘I mean, you’d think a movie that sheds light on the hidden nightmare of child trafficking would be a pretty admirable cause worthy of support.’
Shot in 2018 with funding from Mexican investors, the film tells the story of former US Homeland Security special agent Tim Ballard, who in 2013 started Operation Underground Railroad to rescue children from Colombian sex traffickers. The film was originally scheduled for release by 20th Century Fox, but that deal was canceled when Disney bought the studio in 2019, paving the way for Angel Studios to step in.
‘We’re getting messages from all over the country telling us about packed theaters, sold-out theaters, and spontaneous standing ovations for the film in numerous locations,’ said Brandon Purdie, Angel’s head of theatrical distribution.
‘Seeing this film has become a must, thanks to incredible word of mouth.’

Also tells how he and his wife adopted 2 children, a brother and sister from that rescue and the LONG process that took. It talks about the heroes who provide after the rescue care for these victims… it’s a must see in my mind!
