Just watched We Were Soldiers .. for about the 200th time. 

Colonel Hal Moore (pictured) retired as a Lieutenant General. He is also the only Commander in the history of the U.S Military to never lose a soldier under his command to MIA or POW status in a major conflict. When he said “Dead or alive, we will all come home together”, he meant it.  

The majority who fought in Vietnam don’t get the credit they deserve. 

Was that war corrupt? Yes. 

Was it a unilateral wet dream of war mongers? Absolutely. 

Was it a gross display of the Military Industrial Complex? Yes. 

Did the baby get tossed out with the bathwater in regard to acknowledging a fair number of heroes and historic battles in that war? I do believe so.  

It was an egregious war, with an egregious loss of life, and in the end Vietnam ended up falling to Communism anyways. 

Too often the first reaction for so many of us (myself included) is: “Vietnam was bullshit”, or “We should have never been there.” 

And while those statements may be true – None of that erases the fact that many went because they were ordered to, and they stood shoulder to shoulder with their brothers in arms and produced many a hero that history has long overlooked. 

We are all too happy to shit on that war without giving proper respect for the actions taken by American troops in the battle of La Drang Valley, or Hamburger Hill, or Khe Sahn. 

Carlos Hathcock, for instance, crawled through 500 yards of jungle and brush an inch at a time over a span of 3 days, often times coming within feet of enemy soldiers. His objective was to take out a high ranking NVA General. Not only did he succeed, but he also managed to make his way back out of the NVA Base without being detected.  

Not every soldier wanted to be there. But they still fought, and they did so for the man standing next to them. That? That is about as honorable as it gets. 

Am I saying we should glorify this war? No. Not at all. What I am saying, though, is that we should pay a little more attention and respect to those that served in that war and did so honorably while being equally as heroic as those who fought in WWII. 

To the Vietnam Vets out there – Thank you. You are not forgotten, nor overlooked. We see you. 🇺🇸🙏🏻🇺🇸
