Every few years, the US Army Corps of Engineers haul out heavy equipment to pump in beach and offshore sand that is removed from a build-up on the cape north of Port Canaveral.
Tons of accreted sand is being transferred to replace Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach shorelines starved of the sand’s natural flow. Port Canaveral is almost constantly being dredged and additionally protected from silting by a tightly constructed rock jetty at the south entrance to its shipping channel. Thus the jetty interrupts the natural southward flow of sand. The project is managed and 100% funded by the Corps of Engineers.
Work began last week while turtle nesting season is over, working 24 /7 to replenish our shoreline with another 100 feet of sand.
