Restoring firearms

President Trump has directed the Justice Department to tackle what officials call systematic violations of Second Amendment rights, launching the first federal gun rights restoration process since 1992. The DOJ issued an interim final rule to restore firearms rights to individuals who pose no public safety threat, ending a three-decade bureaucratic freeze.

The proposed system will allow citizens whose firearm rights are legally restricted to petition for restoration while maintaining restrictions on dangerous criminals and illegal aliens. Bondi retains final discretion over all applications, reviewing each case individually. However, violent felons, registered sex offenders, and illegal aliens will remain presumptively ineligible except in extraordinary circumstances.
