Laura is also a former comedian and producer, inventor of the ‘wine condom’ that goes over a wine bottle instead of saving the wine by putting the cork back inside. Where my parents are, the nearby hospital has gone crazy with DNR requests – a couple of times when my father was hospitalized, they sent in 4 (!!) different doctors each time to push this hard on us, separately (including one who was specially sent in to speak the language of the old country – that really pissed off my dad).
Anyway, last time I asked the doctor why this was suddenly being pushed so hard (it has become extremely obvious in the past few years only).
She answered that it is a difficult and emotional decision for doctors, and so it is easier if the family provides consent.
I did not think of saying this at the time, but afterwards it struck me as ludicrous. What if your investment advisor told you “I will be your broker, but you should tell me what to buy and sell and when, because it is a difficult and emotional decision for me”.
I did tell the doctor about the story of Edwarda O’Bara, who (when she died) was in a diabetic coma for longer than I had even been alive (42 years). Her mother stayed by her side and spent the rest of her life caring for Edwarda, after which her sister took over for the remaining several years until Edwarda died.
This was done because just before Edwarda slipped into a coma she begged her mother not to leave her, and her mother promised that she wouldn’t.
Anyway, the comments on Yahoo at that time were divided into 2 opposing camps: one side said “These people are psychos, how can they torture this girl, this is a complete waste of taxpayer money, these people should be sent to jail” – and the other side said “This is the most beautiful example of motherly love I have ever seen”.
In the end the point I am trying to make here is two-fold:
(1) Stand strong, because you are surely not alone even if you feel like you are fighting the entire hospital. For many it is not the result of trying to hang on for dear life out of sheer terror, but rather it is about preserving the sanctity of life and the Christian idea that suicide is never a choice (not to say that natural death cannot be allowed – just that death should not be artificially expedited).

(2) This will be a much more difficult argument going forward. See how demonically crazy people have become over abortion, even when the arguments against same are clear and rational and powerful. Unfortunately, I believe the same cannot be said about euthanasia – there are only arguments about the sanctity of life and Christian principles (and not even all Christians, mind you). It will be a much more difficult argument going forward…
