Around these parts in Central Maine’s northern woods communities, folks have a distinct way of talking, often using words I’d never heard until I came “heeyah.”
Example: “Spleeny” describes someone who can’t tolerate the cold.
“Barmy” can describe both a warm and a chilly day.
Maine natives around “heeyah” communicate in the local vernacular which is amusing as well as oftentimes confusing to those who are “from away.” Another notable is how words are drawn out sometimes in a lilting way.
Words ending in “r” sound like… well, here’s an example:
Tucker Carlson, they say “Tukka”.
Ask them to pronounce the word NASA and it comes out NASSER. It’s interesting to hear them drop their “r”s where it’s required, and add “r” to words ending in vowels.
