A few weeks ago friend Karole sent a photo of Morning Glories she’d planted from seed. Her photo was timely!
I’d been trying to figure out how to adorn a rather naked 4 by 4 post that supports my mailbox. Last year I painted it white, incorporating beach-themed designs.
OK, that was cute. But still left the post rather stark.
It needed something, but what? Greenery? The mailbox faces east and gets hot, direct Florida sun pretty much all day. If I planted something, it would have to be a sun lover. And enjoy getting wet on an almost daily basis from summer showers and our sprinklers.
Karole’s success with Morning Glories gave me the answer! They flower, they vine, they cling, and they’re very pretty. And they love the sun. I think this could work!
Beginning with a variety of Morning Glory seed packets (including the variety that blossoms and blooms in the evening), I buried seeds in peat cups, watered them and watched them sprout.
In just a couple of days and seemingly overnight, tiny sprouts emerged from the peat soil!
June 1st
Three days later (June 4), they had grown taller, and displayed hints of little green bumps that would grow into lovely heart shaped leaves.
Fast forward to this morning, when the very first flower bloomed! Well, hello there, pretty one!
July 11
Now the challenge is to keep the vines trained and within the parameters of the pots they’re in. These twining vines have a habit of growing out of control, and with a storm drain nearby, these beauties are going to have to be trained and groomed to climb the post only.
